Chasing Amy (1997)

While Chasing Amy looked ahead of its time in 1997 with its open LGBTQ themes and characters. It remains a favorite of independent film and Kevin Smith fans alike. The film’s primary narrative appears antiquated and somewhat disrespectful to current sensibilities. Ben Affleck’s Holden McNeil tries to persuade Joey Lauren Adams’ Alyssa Jones to date him for the bulk of the film, even though she is a lesbian. Holden lashes out violently at her for her history once she eventually agrees. To be fair, the film portrays Holden as being in the wrong for the majority of this, but current audiences would be put off by the plot anyway.

Pocahontas (1995)

Disney’s animated rendition of Pocahontas was controversial when it was released in 1995 due to the substantial alterations made to the real-life tale and the transformation of John Smith into a heroic character. More than 25 years later, with the truth readily available to anybody with a smartphone connection, the film would almost certainly be considerably more troublesome, if done at all.
