Some outspoken Americans have earned the whole population a bad reputation internationally. The negative perceptions can have wide repercussions, even affecting the foreign policy of a country. Unfortunately, there are a number of nations out there that have a generally dim view of U.S. tourists. We have compiled a list of countries where American tourists may not feel that welcome. However, there is always a chance that this claim is untrue, though it doesn’t hurt to put some effort into respecting foreign culture, laws, and policies unless you want to live up to the bad reputation.
Danish people do not really appreciate America’s “we’re the best” attitude. The Danes are known for being simple and very polite who often trade thank-yous and you’re-welcomes. In Denmark, it is a widespread view that Americans think they are superior to everyone else. This makes Americans unpopular.
The frosty relationship between Russia and the US started with the Cold War and hasn’t really thawed. America has recently opposed Russia’s military intervention in Ukraine and this has made the U.S. more unpopular among Russians. As a matter fact, 71% of Russians view America unfavorably, and the hit American show Chernobyl likely has not helped improve relations! The trials of the past do linger.
According to a Pew survey, 63% of Greeks do not really like Americans. The irrepressible American optimism really gets under the Greeks’ skin. The European country is currently suffering from crushing debts, and the ‘it’ll be fine’ attitude that some Americans have is not viewed positively in Greece. The KKE or the Communist Party of Greece, which has several seats in parliament, is unsurprisingly highly critical of the importance of banks in the U.S. and the country’s love affair with capitalism.
Brazil is a common location in numerous American films but the reality of life in the South American country is typically ignored and its people are commonly disrespected in the said films. Brazilian land is used or homes are rented by directors and producers but they still film American stories. Tourists from the U.S. who visit Brazil are also criticized for ‘poverty tourism’, so they do not really get a warm welcome.
The U.S. and Argentina have a long history of animosity, one that lawyers in a courtroom cannot solve. In World War I, America made accusations against Argentina, saying that the latter abused people’s human rights. However, most Argentineans think that the US is actually an untrustworthy global agent.
Over half (60%) of Spanish people view Americans unfavorably. The foreign policy of the U.S. (to be specific, the war on terror that George W. Bush launched) and Donald Trump’s election have not really sat well with Spaniards, who seem to prefer leaders investing in peace rather than walls.
Some Americans do not save up for their trip before they leave. They prefer to ‘wing it’, acquiring funds for their vacation as they travel. This is called ‘beg-packing’, which involves tourists begging for money on street corners from locals and fellow tourists to be able to continue their holiday. The practice is understandably considered really disgraceful in Indonesia, a country which has over 31 million people living in poverty.
Many Australians think the drive for power in America is feeding racism and discontent. Protesters of white nationalism and anti-fa alike have different views that battle for supremacy. Aside from that, as elsewhere, Trump is very unpopular in Australia. The President’s bad reputation has frequently transferred to American tourists.
In the Netherlands, as many as 59% of the people attribute negative qualities to Americans. To be specific, they think Americans are overweight, dumb, paranoid, and racist and have extremist views. Nevertheless, to a certain degree, the country still has some hope as not all Americans conform to the stereotype.
The widely held view in Ireland is that Americans are arrogant. This view is more marked among merchants that sometimes do business with tourists from the U.S. The Irish business people are particularly unimpressed by American tourists who turn up thinking U.S. dollars can be used in Ireland. This behavior is seen unsympathetically for the simple reason that the European country has its own currency!
America has supported Hosni Mubarak. The country also failed to act regarding the Muslim Brotherhood. As a result, majority (85%) of Egyptians have a negative opinion of Americans, a Pew survey revealed. However, it is important to note that citizens cannot be credited for a political decision.
Russia and Belarus have a good relationship, so the tense relationship America has with Russia transfers to Belarus. More than half (69%) of Belarussians view Americans unfavorably.
Most Slovenians that were surveyed stated that they disapprove of the leadership in America. However, the relationship between the countries may now improve as America’s first lady is Slovenian. It is possible the previous claim is not true anymore.
President Trump has said he will build a wall between America and Mexico. He also said Mexico will have to purchase the materials and foot the bill for its construction. Needless to say, none of these statements has ingratiated America to its southern neighbor. More than half (65%) of Mexicans do not like Americans.
As for America’s neighbour in the norther, there isn’t much love there either. In Canada, 51% view Americans unfavorably. This disapproval is mostly due to Trump’s election as President and his policies that conflict with the policies of Canada. His way of doing business is not helping things either.
In Sweden, people are critical of how liberal Americans fetishize the country. The Swedes do not appreciate the fact that these Americans see Sweden as some type of liberal utopia and even claim that it is paradise on earth. Trump getting elected has also contributed to this European country’s cooling relationship with America. In fact, 51% of people in Sweden disapprove of Americans.
Belgians are really frustrated by America’s the ignorance of geography. They cannot believe that there are American college students who cannot locate Belgium on a map. Someone who has a university degree should be expected to know that Belgium is not a city in Germany, but is a country.
The U.S. State Department may have described Chile as one of the strongest Latin American partners of the U.S., but 47% of people in Chile view America negatively. This may cause the US government some problems in exploiting this ‘strong’ partnership when conducting business.
While few American tourists can speak French, many French people are pretty good at English, which means locals can understand negative comments spoken in English most of the time. Not being polite in any language may cause friction, but unlike in America, French people will not contact their lawyer and sue you.
In Tunisia, the release of the American anti-Muslim movie Innocence of Muslims in 2013 was met with anger. Needless to say, the Islamic nation did not buy nor feature the film in their theatres. Without a doubt, the motion picture has played a part in many Tunisians (47%) disapproving the U.S.
The fraught relationship between Germany and the U.S. is full of love and hate at turns. The trials of the past have established this type of relationship. Generally, Germans think Americans are lazy slobs.
Since 9/11, Pakistan has been holding American attention. This tension transferred to Pakistanis. The ongoing military presence of the U.S. in Pakistan has resulted in Americans being viewed negatively by 59% to 65% of Pakistanis.
It seems Americans can’t help showing off their knowledge of a country based on films they have seen. When an Italian man was asked about the most annoying thing that American tourists do, he said, “The hand-gesture.” If you have seen American movies about Italians, you will know this gesture – the thumb-to-forefinger motion that is so common in this kind of films. As it turns out, the gesture is not only for emphasis, but actually means “What do you want?”
Perhaps you have seen the incredible photos of people smiling with or giving a bottle to huge tigers in Thailand. Maybe you are thinking it is really amazing that they were able to train the animals. Unfortunately, for tourists to be able to interact with the incredible animals, the poor things are sedated, their paws’ tendons are clipped, and their teeth and claws are removed.
It cannot be denied that India’s history is rich and beautiful, but that does not mean the whole country is specifically dedicated to Instagram pictures. Prachi Vaity, a Mumbai-based blogger, has gotten tired of tourists saying something like “I’m in India to find myself!” and she said, “India is a country, not a self-help book! … Look, you can still come to India. Just leave your ‘Eat, Pray, Loving’ at the door. Your ‘self’ is not waiting patiently for you to arrive at some ashram in India, or a monastic retreat in the Himalayas. Sorry.”
It is not a secret that American tourists are generally viewed as loud, but to Scottish people, the “annoying accents” of Americans are a bigger problem. As a tourist, the least you could do is hold back on your Braveheart impersonations.
American tourists often make headlines for causing trouble to the soldiers of the Queen’s Guard. British people are typically very polite, so it is understandable that they despise loud and rude American behavior.
It’s not a secret that American knowledge of geography is the best. In the Czech Republic, people are tired of Americans asking the same question, “Are Czechs the same as Russians?” Locals are curious how much geography Americans actually learn in school. Refrain from asking this cringe-worthy question fi you travel to the Czech Republic!
While Ireland is not part of the UK, North Ireland is since it is a separate country. Many Americans do not know this fact, and find it rather difficult to grasp. The U.K. is made up of England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. Great Britain, on the other hand, does not include Northern Ireland. The British Isles are different from the British Islands as well! If you are now more confused, read up on Northern Ireland a bit before you actually visit the place.
Even though tourists do not know a city’s ins-and-outs, they should always be respectful when traveling. In Cambodia, locals complain of Americans dressing inappropriately when touring the Angkor Wat temples despite reminders posted everywhere. According to an Odyssey author, “Women must cover their shoulders and knees when attending the temples, out of respect to the locals and the monks that go there to pray and meditate. How many American women have I seen in tank tops and short shorts this week at Angkor Wat? Far too many. It’s grossly disrespectful and completely out of line, but something that is ‘advised’ like a cultural norm is often totally ignored by American tourists.”
Travelers love visiting new places and experiencing them through local cuisine. However, Austrians claim American tourists ditch local restaurants and bakeries for McDonald’s. A lot of Austrians think Americans are people of routine and unwilling to try out new things.
“[Americans] imagine that everywhere they go is a theme park, put on especially for them to amuse themselves. In Svalbard, they have even been known to just wander into private homes, and get very upset when they are shown the door,” Mats Andersson said. This one makes sense. No one really wants having an uninvited stranger in their living room!

Yet another Middle Eastern country which doesn’t particularly like America. Well over half (64%) of the population in Lebanon have unfavorable views of the U.S., but there seems to be hope. Since the election of Donald Trump, he has received a higher rating from the Lebanese compared to what his predecessors got.
The U.S. received a 54% disapproval rate from this Sunni Muslim country in 2014. This former Soviet country in Central Asia gave the highest rating to Russia (93%, making it the strongest rating). Tajikistan’s economy is struggling, and the country is unfortunately very poor and corrupt.
It is not a surprise that Iran is on this list. America and Iran have always disliked each other. In 1979, there were 66 Americans who were held hostage for 444 days. This happened after revolutionaries took control of the U.S. embassy in Tehran. Nothing has been the same ever since. In addition, the United States has led the imposition of sanctions on Iran to lessen the Asian country’s nuclear capabilities.
Iraq does not really like the U.S. but it is only understandable. Wars have ruined this Asian nation. The U.S. got a 67% disapproval rating from Iraq and to be honest, it is a surprise that the rating is not higher.

Americans were allowed to go to Cuba, with specific restrictions, of course. America and Cuba are now amicable. Travel is now allowed.
Traveling to Libya is nearly impossible for Americans. Although U.S. citizens have been able to obtain visas from the Libyan government since 2010, it doesn’t happen often. There are several terrorist groups in the country today, so we don’t know what reason people have to go there. Libya is another country that isn’t very fond of America.
Saudi Arabia and America may be allies, but it isn’t that easy for U.S. citizens to travel to the country. The only way Americans can get a visa is if they are working in the oil and gas industry or teach English. The current scandal of a murdered reporter in Saudi Arabia has put it at odds with the U.S.
Possible terrorist activity in Yemen has been a cause of worry for the U.S., so hundreds of Yemeni citizens have been detained by America at Guantanamo Bay. It makes sense that 70% of Yemenis dislikes America. Among the survey participants, only 9% of approved of the leadership of the United States.
Since the NATO bombings back in 1999, Serbia has hated the U.S. A lot of anti-America groups can be found throughout the country and they claim that the United States is the devil. The hatred started during the war when America killed 3,000 innocent civilians.
Malaysia is not fond of America due to the recent policies of the U.S. toward Muslim countries. If you guessed a quarter of Malaysians are a fan of America right now, you almost hit the mark. Only 26% of Malaysian citizens like Americans. Almost three quarters supposedly hate American tourists since they are rude and loud when they visit the Asian country.
North Korea practically hates everybody, so it’s no surprise it is on this list. Not one citizen who was surveyed said they liked America. They believe the U.S. is a threat to their country.
Kyrgyzstan was once part of the Soviet Union, but today, they dislike the United States. For 12 years, the U.S. had an airbase in Kyrgyzstan, but the latter chose not to renew the contract in 2014. The shift was probably the end of the alliance between the countries.
In recent years, Japan’s popularity with tourists has increased. “Miyabi” in Kyoto City is an area that is soft and highly cultured and Kyoto residents are pleased with this. Unfortunately, the increasing number of tourists is causing the city to slowly lose its touch. Even worse is the fact that the favorite restaurants of Japanese locals tend to prioritize visitors, which means the Japanese are not able to have their favorite foods.
Over time, Iceland has turned into a really exciting travel destination. It is almost like Disneyland for adults. So much over-tourism is happening in this country partly due to the attention it got from Game Of Thrones. Locals are not really happy about this because too many visitors can mean a threat to the environment and places of attraction.
Uruguay is located between popular destinations like Argentina and Brazil, making it very attractive to visitors. Cannabis has been legalized in Uruguay, so it is not a surprise that more are visiting the country recently. Aside from that, the famous weird meatpacking facility of Fray Bentos is one of the biggest reasons contributing to the large increase in the number of visitors.
The home of Game Of Thrones, Croatia’s Dubrovnik City is where the series was filmed. The number of daily visitors had risen to 10,000 a day. This has resulted in the reduction of the population of permanent residents, from 5000 back in 1991 to 1157 in the year 2018.
An exciting country with a lot of beauty and action, the Netherlands has experienced many tourists rushing to visit its capital, Amsterdam. This city’s population is less than a million, but it gets 15 million visitors per year. It is such a small city, so the locals hate the large number of visitors that they see, especially how some people behave when they come to visit.

Vietnam’s Halong Bay is an infamous world heritage site and the city where it is located gets numerous visitors every year. The increase in visitors has meant an increased need for tour guides and boat workers who run the boats sailing the bay. However, many of these guides and workers are inexperienced and focus more on making money rather than giving tourists a great experience.
Islands are super cool because they are basically another country within a country. Palawan Island is located in the Philippines. It is a stunning area that has almost 36,000 residents and 20,000 tourists! There are not enough accommodations or local food, and locals are angry as farmlands have been ruined due to the construction of resorts and hotels. Tourists used to visit the place for its genuine natural beauty, but it’s now about having a good tan.
The locals in Colombia are very much aware of the presence of tourists. Because of the amount of tourism, the country has decided to change its development plans, and this angers Colombians. In Colombia’s tourism capital, Cartegna, foreign developers are funding the developments and they are focused on the income they get from tourists. They disregards how the developments are affecting locals.
One of the places in Africa that is the most visited is South Africa. Tourists still go there every day despite the growing issues of drought and crime. The locals do not really mind having visitors, but they do not appreciate the fact that property prices in Cape Town are rising as more and more tourists become interested in the city. The residents can now barely afford to live in the capital.
Portugal has experienced a large amount of over-tourism, particularly Lisbon. While tourism is bringing the capital city significant financial benefit, it has come at the expense of locals. Many Portuguese have difficulty finding affordable housing in the city center since a lot of the accommodations are made available for tourists on short term rental websites. Even worse, ancient houses are posted to be renovated by foreign investors and rented out to visitors.

This country is on the list twice because even if Americans can travel quite easily without a visa, one of the locations which do require a visa is China. Tourists are required to apply for a visa at the Chinese consulate which corresponds with their state in the U.S. American citizens traveling for tourism or business are commonly issued multiple-entry visas which last for 10 years.
A thorough application process is the first step in India’s complex visa processing system. People are advised to use an expediting system. For tourist purposes, there are two types of visas, a single entry electronic visa (e-Visa, issued online) that allows the tourist to stay for 30 days in the country, or a multiple entry visa that is valid for 10 years and issued as a sticker visa placed on the passport.

You can also apply at the Indonesian Consulate beforehand. Just remember to make sure it has authority over your state and you pay attention to the visa process of your state.
Just like other African nations, Kenya also requires American citizens to get a visa. A single entry visa can be obtained online but for multiple entry visas, applications are processed through the Kenyan Consulate located in New York City.
