You learn all the positive and negative sides of a job when you work for a long time. People may not understand what’s going on behind the scenes as customers, so it’s up to someone in the know to spill the beans. Fortunately, a few people were willing, to tell the truth about their jobs to the rest of the world online. Like in “The Wizard of Oz,” these people have peeled back the curtain to reveal the inner workings of their jobs and reveal the mystery.
Look, but don’t touch.
When visiting a museum, you are advised not to touch the exhibits by signs and staff. Naturally, many of these artifacts are hundreds of years old and should not be touched, but the precious artifacts are hidden behind the glass.
According to this museum employee, the staff simply dislikes visitors touching the items, but they are robust enough to be touched. Although simply touching them does not mean you should, it is best to keep these items as protected as possible.
Google is the IT dept.’s best friend.
Calling IT support doesn’t seem to connect you with a professional. This person, who appears to have worked in IT, claims that the people on the other end of the line are no better at using computers than the average person.
Rather, they simply know how to use Google search in such a way that they can quickly find a solution to the problem. After that, all they have to do is relay the information to the customer, and their job is done.
Most people prefer to feel in charge of every aspect of their lives, including the room’s temperature. This person clarified, however, that not every thermostat accomplishes what it claims to do.
They described how there is such a thing as a dummy thermostat, which provides the illusion of control without actually providing it. This reportedly results in fewer complaints about the temperature but is merely a placebo effect.
Keeping parents happy
Since they need to work to pay the bills, parents send their children to daycare. It means they have to be away from their children to keep a roof over their heads and put food on the table.
Sending your children to daycare means missing milestones such as their first steps and words. Because they don’t want to upset parents who missed their child’s first steps, daycare workers keep it to themselves if children take their first steps there.
This retail manager appears to have a positive attitude toward customer service. They will treat people according to their behavior rather than bending over backward to keep the customer happy. So, if their customers are ordinary, friendly people who have a genuine problem, they will make every effort to solve it for them.
If they are impolite and obnoxious, it becomes store policy not to assist this particular customer. After all, it turns out that the customer is not always right.
Your pizza place is supposed to be one of the few places you put your life in the hands of. After all, at least once a month, if not more frequently, you’ll be ordering your favorite pizza from them.
Did you know that certain pizza joints betray your trust? According to this pizza chef, if you want additional toppings on your pizza, you will receive fewer of each. You may pay for additional toppings, but you will not receive them.
Comforting your pet
We like to believe that our pets are well-cared for at the veterinarian’s clinic. According to this Reddit user, someone is always there to console your pet, especially if they are being put down and you are not present.
It’s heartbreaking to consider, but it’s reassuring to know that our pets don’t leave this world alone and afraid. Most pet owners would prefer to be by their pet’s side if this situation arose, but someone else will if you cannot do so.
Escalating medical bills
Medical device markups, like many other things in our world, far outweigh the cost of production. Given that these devices are used to assist people, you’d think those who set the prices would be more compassionate, but they aren’t.
Rather than that, this Reddit user asserts that the price of medical devices is increased with each sale. This means that by the time it reaches the patient, they will have paid an exorbitant fee to improve their standard of living.
Making a sale at any cost
Even though Verizon is one of the largest telecommunications companies in the United States, one of its employees does not believe it is trustworthy. According to this employee, salespeople are basically told to tell customers whatever they need to hear to make a sale, including lying.
While most people understand that a salesperson’s job is to sell them something, you should generally expect some degree of honesty. That is not what you can expect from Verizon sales personnel, according to this individual.
Behind the camera
People are sold the idea that things are happening organically when they watch a reality TV show. However, it appears that even reality TV shows are more scripted than you might think.
According to a person looking for a new house, people looking for a new house have already bought it, according to a person who worked on the show “House Hunters.” Then they go to their friends’ houses and pretend to be interested in them before ‘buying’ the one they like best.
The best snack time
The deli at Wal-Mart is a fantastic place to make pretty much any salad or sandwich you can imagine. According to one employee, the best time to go to Wal-Mart for the best price is after 7-8 p.m.
After that period, the grocery store will lower its prices to clear its inventory, as its ingredients expire. That means you can get the perfect late-night snack for a fraction of what it would cost during the day.
In some restaurants or stores, you may have seen soup served inside a loaf of bread. Although it may appear that food must be served immediately, this individual claims that this is not always the case.
In their experience, the soup arrives at the restaurant already made and frozen, implying that it is likely defrosted in the microwave. That’s not the kind of fancy meal you’d expect, and it makes you wonder whether you can trust a restaurant’s quality.
Numerous people become vegan for ethical reasons, as they do not want to support any form of animal cruelty. However, this restaurant employee explains that your vegan food may be cooked alongside meat when busy times.
It’s been suggested that the tongs used to cook your vegan food were also used for cooking raw chicken. We understand that the kitchen staff is under a lot of pressure to get food out on time, but there should be a disclaimer if this is the case.
Free shipping myth
Many of us shop online these days, and we frequently come across retailers that offer free shipping. One person who worked as an online shopping employee wanted customers to understand that shipping isn’t always free.
Instead, the price of the goods will cover the costs of shipping items to customers. People are paying more for their products but believing they are getting a good deal because shipping is not included.
Haircut with gusto
The majority of hair salons operate on the principle that the more hair they cut, the more money they make. While this is true, it does not always translate to the best quality cuts for customers. According to this salon worker, the staff is encouraged to finish haircuts as quickly as possible, and taking too long could result in repercussions.
Some salons appear to place a secondary emphasis on quality, with the most important factor appearing to be the number of people they can serve on any given day.
Nothing happening back there
You’ve probably fallen in love with a pair of shoes in the store only to discover that they don’t come in your size. It’s happened to many of us before, and the only thing we can hope for is that one of the employees goes back and finds your size.
According to one shoe store employee, they aren’t really going back to look for more shoes; they just hang out for five minutes. It appears that you will have to accept that you will not purchase the shoes you desired.
Your bag could be anywhere
The airline has no idea where your bag is if it is lost by the airport. It’s gone into the bowels of the airport, where you checked it in, but it could end up on an entirely random flight.
Your only chance of getting your bag back is to wait until it is scanned wherever it is found. After that, it will appear on the system, and the airline will be able to track it down and recover it for you.
Get your grade checked
This teacher’s comment suggests that it may be worth it if you are not satisfied with the awarded rank. They explained that they could be tired when they mark so many papers and workpieces that they only give random grades.
This teacher claims that they always give higher grades than the work is likely worth, but other teachers have different philosophies. They decide to give you a lower grade without actually looking at your work, which isn’t very cool.
Sneaky marketing trick
Consumers can find online retail to be a minefield, and it can be difficult to trust people with whom you have no face-to-face contact. According to this person, who presumably worked at Amazon, the site’s retailers may not be who they claim to be.
They asserted that if an item has 12 different sellers, it is likely that only three or four of them are genuine. This allows them to sell their products at varying prices without the customer being aware.
Laid-back selling technique
Target appears to be unconcerned about losing money on low-value items. According to this source, Target employees have been instructed to accept whatever price customers offer for items without tickets.
Employees are encouraged to sell at whatever price the customer claims if the item in question appears to be worth less than $50. This policy is in place to ensure that Target customers are satisfied with the service they receive while also reducing check-out line wait times.
Keeping up appearances
This former principal sought to shed light on how private schools operate and what they do with particular students. They asserted that private schools are all about numbers and will not hesitate to expel students who fall short of expectations.
Additionally, this includes students with learning disabilities who would require additional resources to teach. These private schools appear to enjoy bragging about how much better they perform than public schools, but they fail to mention how they abandon helping children in need.
While we would all like to believe that recycling helps the environment, this waste management expert claims that it is a waste of time. He asserts that consumerism has utterly destroyed the world and that no matter how much we recycle, the problem will not be solved.
The man says that around 99% of what we think recycling is actually thrown out for good. It’s a depressing reality and one we hope isn’t true.
People expect some of the finer things in life when dining at a high-end restaurant. Although most of the food will not be the healthiest, most people are unaware of how many unhealthy ingredients are present.
This restaurant employee claims that their kitchen had a large pan of clarified butter and had run out of it by the end of service. The only place butter went on the food, which meant that everyone who ate there got more salt and fat.
Paying for the privilege
You may believe that opera singers undergo the same audition process as any other singer or actor. While opera singers are required to audition, they must pay for the privilege of performing in front of an audience.
Although the singers must pay a submission fee, there is no guarantee that they will be hired. Instead, it’s a cost they must accept while crossing their fingers that they did enough to impress those judging them. Talk about a difficult job.
How many people owned this?
According to this Reddit user’s calculations, if you invest in an antique or vintage piece, you will most likely be the fifth person to own it in the piece’s entire history.
The item has most likely doubled in price each time it has been purchased, implying that it would have cost a fraction many years ago. Of course, if you were alive all those years ago and could have owned your vintage item firsthand, it wouldn’t have been considered an antique.
Room not guaranteed
As this former hotel worker confirmed, it appears that airlines aren’t the only ones who purposefully overbook. They claim that booking a room through an online service like Expedia does not guarantee you a room for the night.
Since these services frequently overbook rooms, the former hotel employee advised that you book directly through the hotel’s main website. Customers who book directly may have a better chance of getting a room than those who book through a third party.
The petition’s real purpose
We’re confident that if you care deeply enough about whichever political cause you support, you’ve done everything you can to help. Often, this means doing something as simple as signing political petitions to help bring attention to a particular issue or campaign.
According to one source familiar with the inner workings of these campaigns, they have a hidden agenda. The only thing they appear to be good for is collecting people’s email addresses, which they will most likely use to target them with advertisements and political agendas.
Drive-thru not drive-stop
There’s a reason it’s called a ‘drive-thru,’ and it may not be solely for the customer’s benefit. If you’re looking for a quick bite to eat, the service is excellent, but keep in mind the people who work at the drive-thru.
The company timers each customer interaction, putting the employees under pressure from their bosses to be quick. Customers who are unsure of what they won’t wreak havoc on a person’s conversion rate, potentially jeopardizing their job.
Beneath the surface
There appears to be no substitute for quality, and this person’s competitors’ lack of it irritates them. This upholsterer is fed up with seeing people in the industry cover up all of the bad fabric and material rather than removing it and starting over.
They advised anyone having their furniture reupholstered, recommending that they request progress pictures. You’ll be able to see the steps involved in restoring your furniture to its former glory in this manner.
Check your hospital bill
If you were ever sick enough to need the hospital, you were probably amazed at the size of the bill waiting for your recovery. This person is a doctor friend, and it was advised that they always ask for a detailed account if they have to pay.
Their friend informed them that the hospital routinely overcharges patients but can determine where the costs originate by requesting an itemized bill. Almost always, this method will result in cost savings.
Diamonds aren’t forever
We’re confident that a jewelry store takes excellent care of its valuable stones, but mishaps do occur. Many of the gems are carried in trays, and it’s obvious that they occasionally spill on the floor.
This person explained that shouts are frequently issued, warning people to freeze if they kick or step on some diamonds. Hopefully, they recover everything they drop, but it’s worth scanning the floor of a jewelry store for yourself to see if you spot any.
Clean your produce
This grocery store employee asserts that customers should always wash their fresh produce purchases. They stated that if a box breaks open and the contents fall to the floor, they will not discard the contents.
Rather than that, they will rebox it to make it appear as though it never left the floor. As a result, it seems prudent to wash any fresh produce you purchase to remove any germs before eating or cooking it.
Many of us assumed that whatever we said to our doctors or therapists would be kept between them and us. However, this person, who spent time shadowing a therapist, claims otherwise. They were taken aback when they saw the therapist over lunch discussing patients with other healthcare professionals.
They appeared to be not only discussing their cases but also gossiping and mocking them. This person went on to say that not all therapists were like this, but it’s not a comforting thought for people going through therapy.
Don’t be fooled
It’s always a good idea to do some research before making a purchase, even when buying paint. It may appear to be a simple hardware store purchase, but not everything is as it appears.
According to this hardware store employee, some offer identical paintings to others but are simply marketed differently. They claimed that for what is essentially the same paint, there could be a price difference of up to $20.
Some old books don’t survive
The library feels like the place where a book wouldn’t be thrown away if they could help, but that isn’t always true. The librarian claims that libraries often throw away many books, pulp them, or recycle them.
According to this person, many donated books are “tatty,” and they simply don’t have enough shelf space to keep everything. It’s simply easier for libraries to toss things out than to find new homes for the books they don’t want.
The bad-health club
People prefer to visit health clubs to feel better about themselves rather than to feel worse about themselves. We’re not sure we’re willing to go into a sauna again after learning from this employee that they aren’t cleaned very often.
Furthermore, according to this person, the pools aren’t cleaned and instead rely on the chemicals in the water to keep everyone safe. These people appear to do nothing but scoop out whatever they can see and leave the rest to the chlorine.
This person wanted people to know that Photoshop is used in almost every marketing campaign you will ever see, even though it isn’t a secret. They claim to be constantly pointing out bad Photoshop work on ads and billboards, but we assume this is because they know what they’re looking for.
Most images may appear genuine to the untrained eye, but they’ve all been altered with filters and touch-ups. Photoshop has distorted what we believe to be a reality, so we can no longer trust our eyes.
When we think back on our school days, we may recall one classmate in particular who seemed to get away with just about everything. It’s possible that this was due to their status as the teacher’s pet.
Even though we’re sure teachers won’t brag about having a favorite, they do, as this educator readily admitted. If students want an easy time in school, it appears that getting on the good side of their teachers pays off.
Looking after your bestie
Leaving your pet with the vet, especially if they are kept overnight, can be difficult. At the very least, you won’t have to worry about your special little guy being overlooked by the veterinarians, who enjoy lavishing affection on people’s pets.
This veterinarian explained that they completely put everyone’s cats and dogs caring for them while it isn’t a secret. Even if you miss them while being treated by professionals, knowing they are in good hands is reassuring.
The price of comedy
A comedian’s life may appear to be glamorous, but it is far more difficult. Unless they land a writing gig for a TV show, comedians make about 80% of their money at private events.
They don’t always seem to go as planned, but at the very least, they help pay the bills. Hopefully, when performing an awkward routine in front of a CEO who wouldn’t know a good joke if it hit them in the face, comedians can see the funny side.
We just have no idea
When dealing with a professional in their field, you usually assume that they are well-versed in their field. And you want that to be true even more so when the subject you’re discussing has the potential to kill you.
While anesthesia is generally thought to be quite safe these days, it’s a little concerning to learn that even the most seasoned practitioners don’t fully understand how it works. However, we suppose the most important thing is that it works. However, it’s still a little creepy.
Getting played like a fiddle
It was obvious! There have been numerous occasions when we have gone to fiddle with our thermostat to discover that it does not perform as expected. While we initially attributed it to the evil thermostat gremlins that we assumed infested every home, it’s nice to have a more realistic explanation.
Consumers are constantly being deceived and played with, which is something no one could have predicted. We’re fairly certain that from now on, we’ll be questioning the accuracy of nearly every thermostat we use.
The horrifying truth about hotels
…is that they’re infested with bedbugs! Bed bugs will not kill you, but they are nasty little critters that can turn your relaxing vacation into a sleepless nightmare. Knowing how common they are, even in the nicest hotels, is a little unsettling.
But we suppose it makes sense: with people checking in and out of hotels at such a rapid pace, it must be difficult to keep track of the small items they may leave behind. However, we’re not planning on using Trivago anytime soon.
Romance novels being mass-produced
It’s an odd life being a writer. (You can believe us when we say that.) You write things down that other people need to be done, and you’re not supposed to question them too much. People who work as ghostwriters are frequently assigned unusual tasks. Creating multiple romance novels for clients all over the world is a common writing gig.
It turns out that these “writers” frequently compete for monopolies in this market, releasing a large number of books until they establish a name for themselves. What an odd world you live in, professional writing.
Wait, it’s not safe?
This one came as a complete surprise to us. When we visited a location that required a higher level of security, we assumed that all of the cameras and bulletproof glass windows were legitimate. They might be… or they might not be, as it turns out. Now that we think about it, this makes sense.
Why should they spend the money on the real thing when a knockoff causes people to behave in the same way? Still, for the bank tellers behind the glass, that’s terrifying. Keep your fingers crossed and hope it’s true!
Actually, zero people have booked today
This should come as no surprise to anyone who has spent time on the Internet: pop-up ads on hotel and shopping websites are completely fake. They may claim that X number of people have already completed Y, but this is never the case.
If you’re used to using the Internet, you’re aware that everything you see should be taken with a grain of salt. Even the most genuine-appearing information on the internet has the potential to be false. According to a Harvard study, 98% of the statistics on the Internet are false.
The power of the IT worker
IT workers aren’t treated with the respect they deserve. We rely on them to keep our world running because there are problems with our computers that the average person has no idea how to fix. Even if you haven’t done anything wrong on your computer, it’s still a bit of an exposed feeling when the IT guy goes through it.
They can learn almost everything about your habits just by being on your computer…they just don’t care to judge you for it. Thank you for being so laid-back, IT people.
Borrowing some help from the neighbors
This one is both wholesome and depressing at the same time. According to this teacher, one common teacher trick is to obtain supplies from people who are willing to give things away for free in the name of improving early education. This is truly wonderful to hear, and we are grateful to know that our teachers are supported by others.
But what about the fact that teachers have to go out of their way to get free supplies? That’s a little depressing. That is insufficient infrastructure for education! If a teacher requires supplies, the school should procure them on their behalf.
Water for us, please
Fruit juice is a great way to add variety to your diet. It’s a simple way to get your daily fruit intake, and the health benefits are substantial. However, after reading this, we’re not sure we’ll ever drink fruit juice again. According to this person, fruits that aren’t fit to eat – specifically those containing eggs and insects – are given to companies and turned into juice.
We’re confident that they have a reliable method of cleansing the fruit before use, but we’re still on the fence about this one. For the time being, we’ll stick to drinking water.
Working hard or hardly working?
A sound engineer’s life must be exciting. You get to collaborate with some of the industry’s most talented musicians. Furthermore, you are, in a sense, collaborating with them. The music wouldn’t sound right without you. It’s all fun and games until an artist decides to be excessively picky and obnoxious.
According to this engineer, it’s pretty common to fiddle with some knobs that don’t do anything until the artist is satisfied. It appears that the placebo effect has a place in a variety of industries.
The scariest horror movie ever
Visiting the theater is both a pleasurable and strange experience. It’s always fun to see a new, hyped-up movie with a group of enthusiastic friends. However, the snacks are exorbitantly priced! Don’t forget about the lengthy previews before the film, as well as the strangely sticky floors. We’ve always felt that movie theaters are filthy, but it’s always been too dark to tell.
As far as we can tell, this post serves as a convincing demonstration of how disgusting they are. Everything that appears to be transpiring inside of the theater is scarier than the horror film you are currently watching.
Make sure to be specific
You want to be as specific as possible when it comes to insurance. This is a rule that many people overlook because we assume that insurance agents (and others) are always looking out for our best interests. This isn’t correct. Many agents will attempt to bring you down at any time.
To avoid this, the best course of action is to purchase particular insurance for events that are unlikely to occur. If you end up with mold in your home, you’ll be relieved that you purchased mold-specific insurance to cover the situation.
How to cope with a hard job
Many of us despise our work. It’s difficult to get up early every day, drive to the same building, do the same job, and return home exhausted. Those of us who do not work at a 911 call center, on the other hand, should be grateful that we do not have such a stressful job.
One of the most difficult things you can do is listen to distressed callers describe crimes for hours on end. According to this individual, those who work there cope with the situation by cracking jokes. They have to deal with it in some way, no matter how morbid it is.
Sorry, the ice cream machine is broken
At last, some light has been shed on our generation’s biggest conspiracy! Anyone who has ever gone to McDonald’s and ordered ice cream knows how frequently the ice cream machine there is “broken.” We all assumed it was simply code for the employee being too lazy to make ice cream, but it turns out it’s a little more complicated than that.
Simply stating that it is broken, the workers are actually saving us from listening to a long explanation. It’s something we never thought we’d say, but thank you to the McDonald’s employees!
That’s showbiz, baby
As amazing as Hollywood’s products are, it’s widely acknowledged that there’s a lot of bad stuff going on there. People are exploited, people are trampled on, and many behind-the-scenes figures are egregiously corrupt.
This is something we’ve always assumed, but it’s interesting to hear it confirmed by someone who works in the industry. All of our assumptions have proven correct, and people continue to break the law in their pursuit of greater wealth and fame. That is not surprising to us!
The truth about bartenders
Working in the customer service industry, no matter what position you hold is extremely difficult. It’s not always easy to put on a happy face and be polite, especially when you’re having a bad day or a customer is rude to you. Bartenders perform the same duties as any other customer service employee.
They may appear to be friends with you, but they’re just looking for more business. An elegant and succinct terms, this bartender expressed their feelings for the general public. They’ve got everyone.
A lesson from a plumber
Plumbers are among the most useful tradespeople on the planet. They always have a solution for getting our toilet or sink back to normal when it becomes clogged in an apparently unfixable way. With that said, there are a few things that every plumber encounters regularly and despises seeing. First and foremost, flushable wipes.
The term “flushable” turns out to be a marketing ploy. People abusing garbage disposals is number two. Just because it has the word “garbage” in its name doesn’t mean you should treat it like one!
We don’t like to admit it, but many of the food we eat isn’t prepared with the highest hygiene standards in mind. The signs in fast food bathrooms that say “employees must wash hands” may be encouraging, but who knows if they are actually followed. Restaurants with a short staff must move quickly, and handwashing takes time.
The same can be said for food that has been dropped. If it is thrown away, money is forfeited as a result. It’s a little disgusting to think about it. Hopefully, they will, at the very least, adhere to the five-second rule.
How to get a university job
Those of us who have recently graduated from college have firsthand experience with this, but, indeed, many university professors are not actually teachers. Instead, they are university employees who have been forced into teaching positions after conducting their own research.
Many of them are also students, which means they must balance teaching with their own responsibilities. Students may not always have the best learning experiences as a result of this, but at the very least, college is a relatively inexpensive option. Right? ….Right?
How groceries work
This is one we would never have guessed. Grocery stores appear to have a profit model that is heavily reliant on their produce sections. The items in the middle of the store, such as crackers, rice, and other similar items, don’t give them much money.
We had assumed that the expensive mass-produced items in the store’s center would be far more profitable, but we were completely wrong. So, the next time you’re picking up apples and kale, keep in mind that you’re helping your local grocery store!
