Constable Patty Desormeau, meanwhile, developed the vulnerable persons self-registry for the Calgary Police Service. She got the inspiration to work on this after learning about the Ontario autism registry. As a member of the Diversity Resources Unit in the service, she knew that it was a good idea to do this. After all, this would help protect the people who needed help the most.

Nestor was also honored during the gala. He saw a teen at the edge of a bridge. She informed him that she wanted to kill herself, so he convinced her not to do this. “As he got closer, she went over the ledge and hung by her hands. Nestor made a split-second decision and grabbed hold of her arms to stop her falling,” the police explained, “Nestor hung there, leaning over the bridge, holding the girl for more than three minutes in 35-degree temperatures before police arrived. An officer arrived, leaned over the edge and grabbed hold of the girl’s leg to pull both her and Nestor back to a safe location.”
