It does not sound likely that their mother left the fox cubs in the sewer grate on purpose. However, animal experts believe that there is a good reason if she did. Fox dens are generally cool and dark, so a sewer grate would have made a good one.

The mother fox probably made a mistake by going out and leaving the babies behind while looking for a den. Even though the sewer was cool and dark, this does not mean that it is a good spot to leave the poor fox cubs in that spot.
