The Colorado Springs Fire Department is used to getting SOS calls, but there was nothing that could have prepared them for what was going to happen. It turned out that those puppies were hiding a secret that they could not have predicted.

Job Demands

We are sure that you already know this, but firemen are not only in charge of extinguishing fires. They are called in to help with other emergencies as well. Did you know that they also help out animals?

Just A Normal Day

It started out like a normal day at the Colorado Spring Fire Department station. They had no idea that there was going to be a strange development before the end of the day. Several firemen would be deployed to a rather strange rescue. What do you think will happen?

A Call

The CSFD got a call about animals in need of rescue. A couple of minutes later, a team was sent to answer that call. They knew that they could help out the poor animals more quickly if they got there sooner. Not once did they think that the rescue would be so unique.

Precautions

When it comes to rescuing and helping animals, there are certain precautions that one must take. Animals have different behaviors and mannerisms, which means that they can react differently when faced with danger. There are those that act more aggressively when they feel like they are in danger. This is the reason the firefighters follow a set of rules to ensure both their safety and that of the animals.

Always Prepared

We want you to keep this in mind while we tell you the story. The firefighters had to be careful about the way they handled it. Regardless of the situation, it was important to put their safety first. The team did not know what animal they were dealing with, so it was even more important to be cautious.

No Worries

The firefighters were not very worried about that call since they had plenty of experience with things like this. Even though they had no idea what animals were in need of rescuing, they were confident that they could handle the situation.

The Clock Is Ticking

If it did not rain, the animals were not in immediate danger. Still, the firefighters knew that it was important to act quickly. Not only was the enclosure dark and deep, but it was also very cold. It was clear that they could not afford to waste any time. They had to think of what to do.

Quick Thinking

To the team of firemen, it looked like the animals were tiny. They knew this since the animals were unable to get out even though the sewer grate was not that deep. The team just needed to send one or two men down there to pull them out. The firefighters started to get ready to rescue them.

First Look

The firemen worked together to raise the storm grate so that they could get to the bottom. They clearly heard the cries of the poor animals. They realized that they were dealing with babies here! The team was left wondering what they were doing in that place. How on earth did they even get there?

First Look

First Look

No Home

There was no reason for these small animals to be in a storm grate. It would have made more sense if they were in the wild. The animals were far from any sort of wild habitat. The firefighters could not help but wonder why the mother was not down there with them.

Abandoned

The firemen had yet to figure out what animals were down there, however. They had to figure out the layout of the sewer so that they could continue with the rescue. If their mom or dad had been there, it could be that the firemen spooked them and made them run away.

A Difficult Situation

The firemen could not believe that the baby animals were still alive. The sewer was filled with dirt and garbage! It was sad to see that they were so cold and had no access to food. The team was not sure if they would be fine, but the least that they could do was to try.

The firemen knew that they needed to be careful about what they do next. If the mother was in the vicinity, she would prefer to rescue her babies on her own. Not only that, but the mother might come back and just abandon the babies if the firemen took them out. They had to make a decision right away!

Deciding

The firemen were faced with a tough decision. Should they just leave the animals there and hope that the mother comes back for them? Or should they simply take things into their own hands since the mother was no there? They were aware that the babies needed help one way or another. One thing they had to do was figure out what these animals were.

The team was unable to figure out what they were. They would only know for sure by pulling out the animals. If they were domestic, they would require serious help. However, they knew that wild animals have a better chance of surviving this.

The rescuers made sure to put on gloves so that they would not get their scent on the babies. They also laid out a sheet beside the sewer. The babies were going to be placed there to keep them out of harm!

Upsetting

The firemen had a hard time believing what they were seeing. For one thing, they wondered if a person put them down there. After all, it was not uncommon for animals to get abandoned by the owners. There are times when owners dispose of the animals when they no longer want them.

Of course, the team held onto some hope that this was not the case. How heartbreaking would it be if this was true? The firefighters decided to speed up. They only wanted to ensure the safety of these puppies.

Returning

Even though the baby foxes got rescued, this is not the end of the story at all. According to the vet, it was possible that the mother was still in the area where they found the cubs. If they returned the babies there, the mother could still retrieve them.

Worth A Try

Even though it might sound like they were undoing their earlier work, the firemen were aware that this was the best route to reunite the foxes and their mother. Reluctantly, they placed the fox cubs back in the sewer drain. This time, they stuck around to keep an eye on them.

Patience

When the fox cubs were in the sewer once more, the team stayed nearby and waited patiently. They made sure to maintain a safe distance so that the mother would not get spooked. There was a chance that she would not come back for the babies before nighttime. It turned out to be a waiting game!
