Broc Brown’s life has been very interesting. The main reason is that because of his abnormal height. This kid is tall, which has caused him to suffer from chronic pain and constant ridicule. Their family had to use their savings to acquire special clothes and furniture for Broc. After he had few public appearances, his life completely changed. You may keep reading this to find out how tall Broc has grown, and if his growth could impact his lifespan. Wait until you learn how tall he is today!
Broc was an average healthy baby when he was born. He just weighed under eight pounds and measured 22 inches long. Darci Moss Elliot, his mother, never really suspected that there is an abnormality about her son. Until he grew up, they began to notice, and it became apparent that he was very different from other children. When his mother brought him home from the hospital, she realized that he was growing very fast.
He Never Stopped Growing
All of the baby clothes and the onesies that his parents had bought for him had been outgrown very quickly. He was such a happy, and energetic kid compares to most other kids at his age. But it seemed that his maturity was far ahead from his peers. It’s normal for children to experience growth spurts, but in a case like Broc, his whole life was one long period of growth. When it’s time for Broc to enter kindergarten, there was an observation made by someone that would change the course of his life.
Growing Up Too Much Faster
Many parents feel that their children grow up too quickly while Broc’s mother Darci also feels that her son was growing up too much faster compare to normal. His mother noticed that her son was way taller than his classmates during his first day on kindergarten. It is all because he was already 5 feet 2 inches tall. In America, most five-year-old boys are around 3 foot 6 inches at this age, the reason why when he stood next to his classmates, he is, of course, the tallest and towered over them.
Taller Than His Age
When the time came that he is already in his first grade, Darci was very curious about her son’s extraordinary stature because they amazingly have the same height already. It came to the point that she began to feel genuinely worried. Broc’s aunt Stacy Snyder said that “When he was still small, he couldn’t afford to ride in a bike because you’re trying to teach a 6-year-old boy who’s the same size as you. It’s very hard because you can’t stabilize him.”
He Is Still His Mother’s Baby
Broc had a different life because he wasn’t able to play in the same way that other kids were able to play. Darci also noticed that it was difficult for Broc to complete the everyday tasks being given to him. Darci said that “When you have a five-year-old who feels hurt, they usually come running to you and you pick them up. You would carry him around. In our situation, he was half my size, so I have a lot of back problems.”
Searching For Answer
Darci thought that Broc’s rapid growth might be due to something more menacing than the average run-of-the-mill growth spurt. She is concerned about her son’s well-being, so she decided to take him to their family doctor for a thorough checkup. One doctor referred Broc to another doctor who did a whole bunch of necessary tests. Once there was the result already, he and his family would now have the answers about Broc’s astonishing size.
A Rare Disease Of Cerebral Gigantism
The doctors were able to give him a diagnosis when he was five years old. He has a very rare condition that has the ratio of one in every 15,000 people. That condition is so-called Sotos Syndrome which is also known as “cerebral gigantism.” After Broc’s mother received the diagnosis, she said, “I don’t have any idea if he will ever stop from growing, but I think there’s nothing that can stop him from growing”. This made his mother Darci worry about her son’s future.
There Are No Other Treatment Options
The family didn’t know much about the diagnosis, which is Sotos Syndrome when they first found about it. At first, Darci was just thinking that her son was just growing fast compared to other children in their class. The Doctors explained to the family that Broc would not likely live past his teenage years. And unfortunately, there are some other, direr effects of Sotos Syndrome. Doctors also told them that currently, there are no other treatment options for Sotos Syndrome.
People who were born with Sotos Syndrome are experiencing rapid and increased growth throughout their lifetime. They usually quickly outgrow their older siblings and even also their parents from a young age. Commonly, children with this condition grow very rapidly until they reach adulthood. At that point, they usually end up being the same height as most other people at their age. But Broc’s case is different because he didn’t exactly have the said description of Sotos Syndrome.
Normal Teenage Boy
Broc experienced a massive growth spurt and grew taller than all of his classmates while it’s normal for children to experience growth spurts during puberty. But Broc’s continuous growth didn’t stop there. Broc’s growth continued past middle school into high school. However, he was a type of normal teenage boy who would like to spend time with his friends, go fishing, and play outside. But by the age of fourteen, he was incredibly six feet tall already, and he still kept on growing. Read on to learn how tall Broc is today.
Too Much Growth Rate
The doctor’s observation of Broc’s condition noticed that he was taller than most people with Sotos Syndrome. This discovery made them even more concerned about his overall health. While at first, the doctors said that “Broc might not make it into his early adulthood”. And now, they were saying that sadly, he probably wouldn’t make it to age 15. Well, it’s all because his growth rate was just too much for any human body to sustain.
Abnormal Growth Can Be Fatal
His abnormal growth can be fatal and difficult for the human heart. He was also suffering from an unusually strained spine, ADHD, intermittent explosive disorder, and some learning disabilities. On top of all that, his body can’t properly process a pain reliever because Broc was born with only one kidney. He is not taking his medication properly for him to make it better each day. Broc said, “I did something to stop the pain I’m experiencing. And it makes me feel very badly like there’s a needle stuck inside my body and it’s hard to deal with it. It felt like a big tennis racket has gone through my back.
Needs Plenty Of Rest
Because Broc doesn’t know how to manage his medications like Tylenol or Advil, his family fully supported him to make his way of life more comfortable. Broc’s family requested to made him a custom-made bed to make it suitable for his fast-growing figure. He also has a better, greater chair that cost his family around $1,000. Broc needs to sleep not less than 16 hours a day during growth spurts. Broc has a lack of energy to push his body for being awake because his figure is using all of its stock energy to continue growing.
A Humble Heart
Broc has been able to stay positive even though his daily life has been a struggle. His aunt Stacy Snyder said that “he takes on his condition day by day with a smile on his face.” His mother also added that “his heart is as big as his body, and overall he is a big softie.” Broc is an eternal optimist, and he comes to terms with the fact that his life may be shorter than most people do. Broc said, “I just wish the doctors could do something to help me ease my pain.”
Encourage To Take A Trip
Because of his condition, he has trouble living his everyday life. There are some things that It’s very hard for him like standing for long periods. Another is to fit in places like cars, restaurant booths, movie theatres, and airplanes to mention some. Luckily, he did some traveling recently. He was encouraged to take the trip. He was given a very great opportunity that would take him miles away from his home and change his life forever.
Guinness World Record
Broc was something like a local celebrity in his home state where he grew up, which is in Jackson, Michigan. He came from this small town with about 30,000 people. But his influence became so huge that the news of his size eventually went nationwide. 2015 was the year when he turned 20, and he held the Guinness Book of World Record for being the world’s tallest teenager until that year. But then he was no longer a teenager, so he could no longer hold the world title.
Meeting Other Kids With The Same Syndrome
Broc participated in a TLC documentary called “Tallest Teens” in 2016. The production of this project followed teenagers who had far exceeded their peers in the growth department. He was able to meet other people of his age with Sotos Syndrome through his experience with Tallest Teens. This helped him understand and realized that he is not alone, and he didn’t have to suffer by himself. Broc learned so many things with this project, and it serves as an eye-opening experience for him.
Tallest Man in the World
Broc’s growth rate didn’t slow down as he grew older. He was then 7 foot 8 inches tall when he turned 19. In contrast, he grows an astonishing 6 inches taller every year. He may become the tallest man in the world if he continues to grow at this rate. This makes the American public became interested and has watched Broc’s journey through TLC documentary, and the good news is that they now invested in his health and his story.
Broc Brown made a continued appearance on television after the TLC documentary has been aired. He and his mother were both featured on The Maury Show in 2016. It is a special anti-bullying episode. They discussed Broc’s experience of being bullied because of his physical differences. After the appearance on the show, surprisingly he met with incredible support where he had no idea at all about the kind of impact his honesty would make to many people.
Huge impact on audiences around the country what Broc said on The Maury Show. It’s all because almost everybody in America has been bullied in some form or another at one point in their lives. Many people contacted him to share messages of support, those who were touched by what he said on the show. Broc also received messages from other children who had been affected by Sotos Syndrome. His family was very happy to have received all of those encouraging messages, but still, they were so worried about how they are going to pay for all of Broc’s medical care.
Broc’s family was responsible not just for the medical bills but also for his clothing. They had to spend more on his clothes every year due to his unique clothing size. Normal clothing sizes didn’t easily fit him. He needs customized ones. Aside from his clothing, another expense is the unique furniture for Broc’s needs. Almost all of the furniture Broc uses are customized to fit his needs. But even though they have all these high expenses, as long as Broc is comfortable and confident, it is worth it.
Broc’s family supported him financially and did everything they could. They even thought of setting up a support page for him on Facebook which they named “The Support Page for Broc D Brown”. After it was made and the TLC documentary was released, the page unexpectedly got more than 15,000 likes. The community of Michigan also helped them and set up some benefits for the Brown family. They raised over $10,000 for Broc’s medical care. The page and the benefits gave a lot of help to the family.
Taller Than The NBA Players!
All the support for Broc overflowed. It was so overwhelming for the family. In Broc’s Facebook page, one unnamed supporter generously gave away tickets to a Detroit Pistons basketball game. Broc was there and was able to see some of the players. He was so amused that for a little while, he forgot his condition. He was even a bit taller than some of the players. The family was delighted by all the clothing Broc received, and Darci remarked that he easily outgrew all of them in just a year.
Grateful For All Of The Donations
Broc’s family could not contain their gratitude for all the help and support the people gave them, but at some point, they still could not help but worry about what Broc’s future will hold. Broc himself, on the other hand, was very positive about it and still managed to be optimistic about it. He was excited about receiving the new clothes people had for him. Stacy Synder, Broc’s aunt, said that she witnessed Broc’s positive outlook about his condition. Broc was just so grateful for all the Nike shoe donations.
Feetz, a California-based company, had heard about Broc’s condition and gave him special shoes. They used 3-D printing technology to achieve customized shoes. When Broc received it, he uttered “I don’t like them. I love them! Thank you so much!” The overflowing and awesome gifts Broc received kept him distracted from his condition. This company was able to help Broc big time since normal sizes didn’t fit his feet. Later, he is not expecting the news he will be receiving from the doctor that would cause him a great shock.
First Airplane Ride
Lately, Broc’s family was able to get a special plane arrangement for Broc going to Arkansas. He went there so he could meet a genetic specialist. He traveled 1,000-miles to see Dr. Bradley Schaefer of Arkansas Children’s Hospital, who was focused on Sotos Syndrome, the condition Broc is experiencing. This doctor said that he could not assure Broc and his family that he would be of big help to them concerning his chronic spinal pain, but he had another news that they would later want to hear.
Positive News From A Specialist
When Broc was still a child, the doctors told him that he would never make it past adulthood. But Dr. Schaefer gave him a different prediction. He said that Broc, having been alive until now, has already proven wrong to most of his doctors. He assured Broc that having a short life was something not to be afraid of anymore. There may be some pain that Broc might have to learn to deal with all his life, but he was confident that Broc would have a regular span of life.
Full Of Joy
Upon hearing Dr. Schaefer’s prediction, Broc and his family were full of joy. Broc said that this was probably the best thing he ever heard. He was much more delighted that he would live for a long time. Darci suddenly was full of tears. Though the doctors are still uncertain of what will happen if he reaches adulthood – will he stop growing or will he continue to grow, Broc’s family were all just glad that Broc will get to experience more and they will be there to witness it.
He Wants To Have A Normal Life
Broc was looking forward to having normal work. He thinks of being staff at a sporting goods store or maybe a cashier. He wants to have a job that he could call his own and normally work as the others do. He and his mother are hopeful to spend a long time together. Darci, on the other hand, tells Broc that he is not forced to do anything outside of his comfort zone. She just wants Broc to live a good, happy, and long life enjoying everything he has.
Determined To Do Great In Life
Today, a man named Sultan Kosen is recorded as the tallest man who lives in Turkey. If Broc continues to grow, he might pass Sultan’s height and have the World’s Tallest Man title. Now that Broc is very positive about his future, he is very determined to do great in his life. There are also other inspiring men with the same condition that Broc looked up to like Andre the Giant, who also suffered the same conditions as Broc. They all embraced their height and overcame all the issues.
Andre Was Already 6’3″ By Age 12
Andre Rousimoff, who was called Andre the Giant, did not take the bus to school during his childhood. His size did not fit. He can only depend on a pick-up truck that fits his size. Fortunately, his father’s friend, Samuel Beckett, who also happened to be their neighbor, had a pick-up truck. This Samuel was a famous playwright known for his work Waiting for Godot. However, during the car rides, they both talk not about this but cricket. They are both into crickets. Beckett even wrote a play about crickets.
Too Tall For The Military
The French Peace Time Army gave Andre a notice but he failed to enlist. Maybe the Army was not for Andre. No shoes might fit him, bed bunks might be too short for him, and trenches might be too small for him to hide. Fate did not put him to the Army but instead, had him focused and interested in wrestling. He worked his way to being a professional wrestler. He trained hard and worked as a mover then ten years later, 1963, made his WWE debut.
Hormonal Disorder In The Pituitary Gland
Acromegaly – a hormonal disorder that develops when your pituitary gland produces too much growth hormone during adulthood. It was 1970 when Andre learned that he was experiencing this. He was in Japan for the International Wrestling Enterprise. It caused him severe body pain but gave him an advantage inside the ring because the size of his body parts became bigger than the usual. He did not want to correct it, thus ignored surgery. He was one of the best fighters back then and later became the “Giant” in the United States.
When Andre returned home after being five years away from his parents, they were not able to recognize him. His acromegaly changed his physical appearance, totally that he looked completely different from his former self. His parents even confessed that they once watched their son wrestle on television under the name Jean Ferre without even realizing that he was their son. This was no big deal to the Giant. Andre still managed to ask questions to his father that made him recognize his son through the twinkle of his eyes.
Too Large For The World
We cannot judge a person from what we see outside. According to Andre’s closest friends, he was emotionally sensitive despite his size. One HBO documentary, hosted by Hulk Hogan, discussed some of the embarrassing situations people with his condition had to experience. It was difficult for Andre to live normally since his size was unusual. The blind, the disabled, the deaf can now easily adapt and fit in our environment, but for big people, it has been difficult. They still had to adjust with the surroundings and vice versa.
Drowned Two Men
There was a movie back then where Ric Flair, Andre, Dusty Rhodes, and Black Jack Mulligan cast together. The casts were having fun one evening and started drinking. Mulligan, out of his senses, punched Andre in the face and return, Andre grabbed Mulligan and Rhodes from inside the place where they were drinking and drowned them both. Fortunately, Ric saw what happened and convinced Andre to return inside. It’s as if nothing happened and he drank again. This had to be cut from the movie according to its director.
The First Member Of The WWE Hall Of Fame
Andre the Giant died in 1993 and was honored by WWE by putting up the WWE Hall of Fame. During that time, Andre was the only person that was selected to be honored. Thus, no special ceremony was held. The following year, WWE had their first inauguration ceremony, and there, Andre the Giant’s inauguration was mentioned. The ceremony for him was never meant to be aired on television, but later in 2015, a compressed cover of it was produced for the network where several of Andre’s signature moves were seen.
His Signature Black Singlet
Andre the Giant secretly hid extra support under his signature black singlet. This caused a limit to his movement inside the ring. Due to his acromegaly that little by little destroyed him physically and also due to his years of wrestling, he underwent spinal surgery. It’s quite ironic that most of Andre’s famous fights happened later in his career. But this was the time when his movements were limited, and the moves he used were basic instead of the flashing moves he used to do in his younger days.
Forced To Surrender The Title
Andre the Giant fought Hulk Hogan for the World Championship title. Andre won but later after some manipulation by Earn Hebner; he was forced to surrender the title back after just a minute. He was never able to take it back fairly. The spectacle that Wrestlemania III attracted the most people during this time and left the manipulation behind the shade. Braced by Andre’s controversial title match, 33 million people were able to watch it in shock on February 4. People were left in dread and knocked for a loop.
He Farted On Opponents In The Ring
Andre, when he was still alive, was one of those men who loved fart jokes. He farted on one of his opponent’s faces. He was currently in a match with Jack “The Snake” Roberts when he eventually sat on Snake’s face and let his fart blast. This was Andre’s tactic to distract his opponents. And if his opponent had long hair, he would joyfully step onto it until it hurts them. His famous prank was to draw his sweat from his singlet and let it flow onto their face.
Drinking More Than 7,000 Calories A Day
Terry Todd, an Olympic powerlifter, usually drinks with Andre, the Giant. Based on his story, he knew that it would not be good for him to match drinks with the wrestler. Todd has seen Andre on how he consumes 7,00orie0 cals of alcohol in every single day. He recalled that on a single day, Andre could drink a case of a particular beer. He would usually cleanse it down with a bottle of wine or two. And when a dessert would come, Andre could take eight shots of brandy.
Andre’s Not Alcoholic, He’s In Deep Pain
Andre, the Giant, deals with a lot of pain, both physically and mentally. He was suffering from a disorder called “Acromegaly” which limited his ability to do things that he wanted to do. And because of this, his body never stops growing and growing. Even doctors tried to perform numerous surgeries just to ease his pain, but there is nothing they could do. That’s why Andre tends to drink a lot. He thought that it was the only way he could feel comfortable.
He Could Drink A Lot
Andre the Giant could drink a lot of booze than you could ever think of. Back when he was in Texas, a young wrestler named Ted DiBiase was commanded to keep the Giant happy. They spend a night in a bar for drinks. Ted told CBS Sports that, when the waitress asked them what order they want, Andre reversely asked if she has a big trash can. The waitress replied, “Yeah, we got a bunch of ‘em”. Andre said, “empty a trash can and fill it with beer and ice.”
“Most Embarrassing Wrestler.”
At the end of his career in wrestling, Andre acquired just as many achievements as he can. His shelf was filled and was complete in 1989. He was also named “Most Embarrassing Wrestler” by Wrestling Observers Newsletter. Andre received this distinction for how he treats his opponents. His biggest embarrassment came against Demon. Andre the Giant was signing autographs before a said match and Demon came out of nowhere and attacked him. Andre smashed him and grabbed him by his mask and threw him across the ring.
Andre Died In Paris
In 1993, Andre received a call coming from Paris about his father’s funeral. At that time, his health was also not good. After his father’s funeral, Andre immediately went back to his hotel and went to sleep. He never woke up. Passing away at 46 years old, Andre’s death was caused by congestive heart failure. It was found out that his heavy drinking and unbearable pain caused him to have this kind of death. The Giant’s ashes were as big as him, and his final weight was seventeen pounds.
Final Resting Place
At first, Andre’s family planned to bury him nearly at his father’s grave in Paris. But the wrestler’s final statement was to cremate him. According to some people, his family took two weeks before they could find a cremation facility that would accept a body that is taller as Andre. His family returned his ashes to the United States and buried it in a garden at his old house in Ellerbe, North Carolina. Robin, a daughter of his, was the beneficiary.
The Redskins Wanted Him
In 1975, the team Washington Redskins were having trouble in their defensive line up. So they wanted Andre, which was one of the largest athletes in the world, to be part of their team. Andre was then offered a chance to try out for the said team. Redskins even called the office of WWWF to hold a press conference in Washington D.C. Although Vincent McMahon and Andre attended the conference, Andre didn’t try out for the Washington Redskins. Instead, he reached the WWE Championship that year.
The Cast Of The Princess Bride
All of the non-wrestling fans adore Andre the Giant for his previous work in the cult classic film “The Princess Bride” in 1987. Andre was portrayed as the lovely Giant Fezzik. But immediately, the producer of the film says that they should look for a basketball player who would fit in rather than Andre. Jane Jenkins, the casting director of the film, disclosed the scouting process by asking the original book’s author “Am I looking for a basketball player?” then the author replied, “No, I want a giant like André.”
Who Could Have Fit The Role
Jane Jenkins, the casting director of the film “The Princess Bride,” was trying to look for a good giant that would fit perfectly the role. She searched for every tall person that she passed in the streets of Los Angeles. There were numbers of other contenders, but the producers wanted Andre to fulfill the role. But, due to the hectic schedules of Andre, he was booked to fly in Japan while they were conducting the rehearsals. Fate came in, his match was canceled, and Andre made it to meet Jenkins.
The Giant Gas
As mentioned a while ago, Andre always farts. Co-star Cary Elwes had a story which happened on the 30th-anniversary reunion of the cast of “The Princess Bride”, it was the first day of filming, and all the casts were so comfortable with each other already and that Andre let out a nearly 20-second count of fart which can be heard even three counties away. Nobody said anything except Rob who told Andre “Are you okay, Andre?” Andre then replied, “I am now boss”.
Andre And Ric Flair Drained A Plane Of Its Vodka Stock
The associates of Andre in the wrestling industry have some seemingly endless stories of his drinking habits. In an autobiography of Andre which is entitled “To be the Man”, a man named Ric Flair has a story that is quite interesting to hear. It was that time when they both flew from Chicago to Japan, Andre drank 106 bottles of beers and Andre’s manager, Frank Valois, drank 56 bottles, and all together they drank every bottle of vodka in that plane.
With a tall and huge body comes with large fingers. Andre, with his enormous fingers, would tend to play the piano with a span of three keys per finger. Could you just imagine how big his fingers were? Even with his rings, it was so huge that the whole silver dollars could fit into its holes. Moreover, in the wrestling industry, he was known to use his large fingers against his opponents. He would sometimes insert one of his fingers in his rival’s bum during a match.
He Scared The Guard Dogs
Being over seven feet tall and weighing 500 pounds, not many people, who are like Andre, would be as intimidating as they are. Not only human beings but also chosen animals have been seen to be intimidated by Andre’s stance. Roger Sembazzia remembered that there was this moment when his trained guard dogs ran for cover when they saw Andre. Conversing with Sports Illustrated, Andre laughed, he told them that these dogs were supposed to be mean to him but what happened was exactly the opposite.
He Can Pull-Off A Prank
Andre would break a prank in a way his friends couldn’t imagine that he can do alone. This is to move a friend’s car from one place to another. He carries it! He would pick up the vehicle and drop it into a new place where his friends would not be able to find it easily. He will sometimes leave the cars in small spaces between lamp posts and buildings, and sometimes he would only turn the vehicle around depending on how much fun he wanted to have.
Andre, having a disorder called “acromegaly”, never thought of having a baby because of suffering from the disorder meant to be sterile. But despite the said things about it, in 1979, he had a daughter. Robin Christensen Rousimoff inherited all the estate his father had. Due to living a life on the road, Andre didn’t have a chance to get to know more about his daughter. When Robin was 10, she was invited to meet his father in their ranch, but she never ended up going.
QVC Was His Not-So-Secret Addiction
Andre the Giant never kept it as a secret that his greatest pleasure in life was buying different stuff from QVC. He was addicted to the television shopping network. He even shops while he was at home. He would always spend most of his hours on buying useless things from QVC. It was seen in his life that there was nothing that he loved more than spending money on his family and friends.
Andre Picked Up The Terminator
A generous kind of person, that’s what Andre the Giant is. He always prefers to give to others than receiving from them. There was a time that Andre, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Wilt Chamberlain had dinner, where Arnold paid the bill and snuck off. As they walk to their cars right after they eat, without any difficulties, Andre picked up Arnold and placed him in his car. After that, there was no report on whether Andre said “I’ll be back” as he moved away from Arnold.
He Was Surrounded With A Velvet Rope
When the first script-reading of “The Princess Bride” was done, Andre got himself drunk and passed out in his hotel lobby. His co-star, Cary Elwes, turned out to be Andre’s drinking buddy. And that night, when Andre passed out in the hotel’s lobby, the hotel’s staff surrounded him with a velvet rope just for other patrons not to trip over him. He was 550 pounds which made it for the staff to carry him, that’s why they just surrounded him with rope.
Fit For A Comic Book
Andre’s life could be just as inspiring as other books may be. That’s why there were two graphic novels made, with him as the inspiration. Andre The Giant: Closer To Heaven, which was written by Brandon Easton and was released in 2016. The other one is, Andre the Giant: Life and Legend, which was written by Box Brown and was published in 2014. These novels made a hard time for the writers to write the whole book because they were trying to fit into Andre’s shoes.
He Always Wanted To See A Play
Andre always wanted to see a play on Broadway. This was the only thing that he could not put a check off of his bucket list. There was nothing on Earth that he never actually got to do. The only reason why he never did was that he was so concerned about the people that would be sitting behind him. He thought that he would block someone else’s view if he were in front of them.
