Are you aware that Columbia Pictures first recruited Kim Novak in the hopes that she will replace Rita Hayworth, one of the biggest stars of the ‘40s who saw a decline in her popularity in the following decade? They also hoped that she would be able to compete with the 20th Century Fox star Marilyn Monroe. Novak made a name for herself when she starred in Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo. She has only ever acted sporadically since the ‘60s, however. In the early ‘90s, she decided to go into retirement. In 2010, she announced her breast cancer ordeal but later won over the illness.

The Italian-Tunisian Claudia Cardinale is an actress who got to start her career after she ended up winning a competition called the “Most Beautiful Italian Girl in Tunisia”. Her prize was none other than a trip to Italy! She did not have an easy time there since she only knew Sicilian from her parents. Even so, her beauty made it easy to snag a number of acting and modeling jobs over the years. In the early days, they dubbed over her voice because she had a raspy voice and French accent. She continues to be outspoken when it comes to women’s rights. In 2000, she became a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador.
